LAC 2026
Our LAC Experience in Washington, D.C.
Going to LAC in Washington, D.C. was honestly such an amazing experience. From the start, I was really excited to learn more about the new USDA guidelines and how they’re going to affect our school meals back home here in Hawaii. Hearing everything firsthand made it feel real—it’s not just something coming “sometime soon,” it’s happening, and we need to be ready.
One thing that really stood out to me was learning about all the upcoming grants that will be available. It was encouraging to see that there’s support out there for our programs, especially knowing how much our schools can benefit from additional funding. I kept thinking about how we could bring some of those opportunities back home to better serve our students.
I also really enjoyed hearing from the industry side. It was interesting to see how companies and partners are already planning how to adjust to the new dietary guidelines that are coming into effect soon. It gave me a better understanding of how these changes don’t just impact us in schools, but the entire system that supports school meals.
Of course, one of the most meaningful parts of the trip was advocacy. We had the chance to meet with the aides of Ed Case, Mazie Hirono, and Jill Tokuda. Being able to sit down and share the challenges we face in Hawaii—especially the unique issues that come with being in the islands—felt really important. It reminded me that our voices matter, and that we have a role in shaping the future of school meals for our keiki.
And not going to lie, it wasn’t all work! Getting to explore Washington, D.C., see the sights, and try different places to eat made the trip even more special. There’s so much history there, and it was just fun being able to experience it all with others who are just as passionate about what we do.
I really think every member should try to go to LAC at least once. It’s educational, it’s inspiring, and it’s honestly just a good time. You learn so much, meet great people, and come back home feeling motivated to make a difference.
Hope to see more of our Hawaii crew there next time!
